Image Resize Guide

Digital images from phones, tablets, DSLR cameras etc can be huge these days which is great for image quality, however uploading these images to the internet can cause problems. Most if not all websites have a maximum image size set for uploading. FAJ’s is 2 MB. The good news is that your images can easily be made smaller without any loss of quality but with vastly improved upload times. Here’s a brief guide on how to do this.

  1. A quick internet search for ‘free image resizer’ will return many websites offering to reduce the size of your image. This will take time as you will need to upload the original and then download the new version.
  2. From within Windows it’s very easy: Type “paint” into the Search field bottom left of your computer and press “Enter” to launch Windows Paint. Open the image you wish to resize. Click the “Resize” button and enter the size you need checking the pixels radio button. For best results, leave a check mark in the “Maintain aspect ratio” box. Save your new image and then upload to FAJ.
  3. From a Mac: There are a few ways to make images smaller if you are a Mac user, two main ones below…

Change an image’s dimensions

  1. In the Preview app on your Mac, if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing, click the Show Markup Toolbar button , then click the Adjust Size button .
  2. Enter new values for width and height, or click the “Fit into” pop-up menu and choose a size.
    • Resize the image by a percentage: Choose “per cent” from the pop-up menu next to the Width and Height fields, then enter the percentage in those fields.
    • Force the image to keep its original proportions: Select “Scale proportionally”. If you change either the width or height, the other value changes to maintain the proportions. If you choose a size from the “Fit into” pop-up menu, the image’s width or height may be smaller than the chosen size to maintain the proportions.
    • Make the image’s dimensions smaller without losing any detail: Deselect “Resample image” before changing the width or height.
    • Save your new image and upload to FAJ.

Reduce an image’s file size

  1. In the Preview app on your Mac, open the file you want to change.
  2. Choose Tools > Adjust Size, then select “Resample image”.
  3. Enter a smaller value in the Resolution field. The new size is shown at the bottom.
  4. Save your new image and upload to FAJ.
